NOT LOST YET
NOT LOST YETTo see what is left in the context of what is lost forces us to pay attention. The 2020 bushfires destroyed 56% of the Glossy Black Cockatoo’s [Calyptorhynchus lathami halmaturinus] habitat on Kangaroo Island and caused severe damage to what remains. I wanted to create something that reflected eons of evolution, unique and beautiful, that could be destroyed in an instant. Sifting through the ashes of 10 million hectares, we must balance the immense scale of loss with the necessity of finding hope. With dedication and resources, the recovery effort of the Glossy Black Cockatoo is a beacon of hope through the smoke. Many other species are not so fortunate, 310 animal and 471 plant species are at high risk of extinction without urgent intervention. Our natural world can only recover with widespread change and commitment to conservation but our disaffection will be its doom.

GORILLA
GORILLAPen and Ink on Paper | 2015 | The once inaccessible rainforests of the Virunga Mountains have been shattered into isolated fragments by deforestation, encroaching farmland, civil unrest, and the threat of oil exploration. So too have populations of Highland Mountain Gorillas [Gorilla beringi], forced to retreat to attenuated island patches of forest on the highest, most secluded mountaintops.
