The once inaccessible rainforests of the Virunga Mountains have been shattered into isolated fragments by deforestation, encroaching farmland, civil unrest, and the threat of oil exploration. So too have populations of Highland Mountain Gorillas [Gorilla beringi], forced to retreat to attenuated island patches of forest on the highest, most secluded mountaintops.
